36 Hours in San Francisco and Berkeley

San Francisco typically wows visitors with its heights or its sights. The hills sear themselves into memory after a few up-and-down-and-up-again cable car rides or punishing walks. Then there are the vistas: the sweeping views of the city, the postcard-ready Victorians below Alamo Square Park. But surrounding all of that is the waterfront: miles of Pacific Ocean coastline and the expansive natural harbor of San Francisco Bay.

The first thing I noticed when I got to San Francisco was how colorful all the trees were! Coming from Southern California, all the trees look the same. There were red leaves, yellow leaves, and more...it looked like fall in San Francisco! I was looking for a place to eat breakfast and came across All Star Cafe, a little bakery. Inside, I learned that they made all their own breads, bagels, muffins and more every morning fresh..and of course I ordered one of everything!

After visiting the University of California, Berkeley with my friend showing me around, we realized that it was beginning to get a bit chillier and that the sun was soon to go down. Loving my sunset photos, I wanted to quickly find the highest point we could, which my friend recommended a stadium that was up a hill. Now we already went over how many hills there were in the area, and how steep they were, but we tried anyway. Realizing that it was getting darker and the sun was almost all the way down, we frantically looked for another idea so we could view the sunset (right now we couldn't see anything because everything was behind the trees. I shouted to some students sitting on the roof of one of the houses and asked if we could join them up there. They said yes and proceeded to show us how to get up... an unstable ladder on the side of the house with a big sign saying "One person at a time!". We climbed up this ladder (very carefully) and then there we were, on this roof, with the most beautiful view of Berkeley and the Golden Gate Bridge in the far off distance across the water. You had to be there, it was such an amazing specular!

The next morning, with only a few hours left to actually see San Francisco, we rushed onto the Bart and headed on our way...

Travel Reflections: 2011 Year in Review

My name is Corey Sandler. I'm an event & portrait photographer based out of Orange County, California - and I love to travel. And when I say that I love to travel, I REALLY mean it. As 2011 comes to a close it is time once again to look back at all the crazy I’ve managed to experience in such a short period of time. This was once again a banner year for me, with plenty of new experiences. My greatest accomplishment this year was a six-week spontaneous backpacking adventure through most of Western Europe, making stops in Italy, France, Monaco, and Spain, as well as many other country's along the way.

Before leaving for Europe, I spent fifteen breathtaking days in Israel. I visited many historical, religious and cultural heritage sites around the country, including Jerusalem, the Western Wall, and the Dead Sea. I was most exhilarated to be able to experience the great cosmopolitan city of Tel Aviv and the ancient mountain-top fortresses of Masada.

Full Lunar Eclipse in Southern California

The sun, earth, and moon aligned on December 10th, creating a full lunar eclipse which was viewable from most of the western hemisphere. Three friends and I decided to wake up early and take pictures of the phenomena. Our adventure began at 3:30 AM in Costa Mesa, as we drove around looking for a good spot on PCH. We ended up in Laguna Beach and set up the tripods and cameras to begin taking pictures. Less than two hours after we had set everything up and were beginning to warm up, the tide came crashing in on us!!

Luckily, all of our camera gear was saved, but the sleeping bags and pads got soaked, forcing us to have to stand the rest of the night. I swear we only made it because Ann Marie took such amazing care of us, bringing us all coffee and keeping us warm!

Winter Hike to Ontario Peak, Mount Baldy

This full-day hike, which began at 7 AM, was 13 miles and a 4,700ft elevation gain. We began the hiking at Ice House Canyon Trail. Because of the snow covering the rest of the trail, it then became a free-for-all scramble up to Ontario Peak, Mount Baldy. Ontario Peak, at 8,693 ft, is one of the highest peaks in the San Gabriel Mountains of California.

Leonid Meteor Shower Celestial Light Show

Every year at this time, the Leonid meteor shower brightens the sky in the hours after midnight. If the weather is clear and you have an appetite, you may enjoy a quiet display of shooting stars. Be alert though, as most meteors streak by in a second or less. The best way to see them is to find a nice, dark place with no street lights and as few trees as possible, and look up. The streaks could appear anywhere in the sky.

We're passing through the debris left by a comet called 55P/Tempel-Tuttle. As pieces -- some as small as grains of sand -- burn up in our atmosphere, they leave brief, bright streaks. They'll appear to come from the constellation of Leo the Lion, south of the Big Dipper.

There's another shower, the Geminids, coming around Dec. 14. Or wait until the Quadrantid shower, predicted to be excellent on the morning of this coming January 4th. When they're at their best, you may see 100 shooting stars an hour -- if you bundle up!

The party had an amazing Hollywood and Aussie style with tons of character. The private party room offered an upscale cocktail bar, with a lot of great music that ranged from the Stones, U2, Billy Idol, The Doors, Kravitz, Echo Beach, and much more. This Birthday bash featured all sorts of unique Aussie dishes and drinks that were all amazing and delicious. The cheeses, meats, crackers, and many great speeches, all created an amazing atmosphere to meet new people and unite with old friends. All your friends wish you a happy 50th Birthday Nick!

For Dash Berlin - ranked #8 Trance and progressive DJ in the world, and born in the Netherlands with the fantastic name of Jeff X Sutorius - the last year can be summed up through the nickname he acquired: The Flying Dutchman, so-called because of a monster world tour to promote 'The New Daylight', his debut released at the tail-end of the year.

A very warm reception to the album thus allowed Dash to take his brand of uplifting, vocal-led trance around the globe, and then some. This hectic schedule also quickly ingrained the touring mentality within Dash - always a good sign for a DJ on the rise.

"It has been crazy in terms of travelling, but to experience all these different cultures so far from home, with everybody dancing and singing along with the tracks, is an amazing phenomenon. The touring has become part of my lifestyle now."

As well as cutting his social media teeth by releasing his own iPhone app and a massively-viewed 40-minute YouTube mix, Dash also debuted his first mix compilation, 'United Destination', in 2010, ushering him yet further into the trance spotlight.

"It was received very well globally and really helped to establish me as a DJ," says Dash. "I'm looking forward to compiling and mixing part two in 2011, to make 'United Destination' an annual concept."

Dash Berlin is best known for his tracks like 'Till The Sky Falls Down', and 'Man On The Run'.
